The peritoneum, subperitoneal space, and retroperitoneum are anatomic compartments frequently involved in pathologic processes that originate in the gastrointestinal tract. Because they represent the result of complex embryologic processes of organogenesis, rotation, folding, and fusion, the distribution of fluid collections resulting from such processes is often confusing.

This determines their accessibility, mobility and interconnection. the right colon, extending along a vertical orientation from the right iliac fossa to the subhepatic region. The attachment of the left mesocolon corresponds to that of the left colon, extending from the subsplenic region to the left iliac fossa (Figures 2.1 and 2.2a, b) [1]. A peritoneal fold is a part of the peritoneum that is raised from the abdominal wall by the underlying blood vessels and ducts.

Before commencing, it is impor-tant to define the terms “attachment” and “suspension.” “Attachment” refers to the flattening of the mesentery Peritoneum, large membrane in the abdominal cavity that connects and supports internal organs. It is composed of many folds that pass between or around the various organs. Two folds are of primary importance: the omentum, which hangs in front of the stomach and intestine; and the mesentery, which The peritoneum is the serous membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity or the coelom. It covers most of the intra-abdominal, or coelomic, organs. It is composed of a layer of mesothelial tissue, supported by a thin layer of connective tissue.

Understanding peritoneal embryology, anatomy and physiology is crucial to comprehend pathophysiological mechanisms and to devise a new focus for research. The vascular response to pathological processes appears to be of considerable importance, since the peritoneal vasculature plays a pivotal role in most associated diseases.

The peritoneum consists of the parietal peritoneum – a heterogeneous, serous, semi-permeable membrane that lines the abdominal wall – and the visceral peritoneum, which covers the abdominal organs (Figure 1). Its surface area is approximately 1-2 m 2 . the right colon, extending along a vertical orientation from the right iliac fossa to the subhepatic region.

Peritoneum anatomy

The parietal peritoneum lines the anterior, lateral and posterior walls of the peritoneal cavity. The deepest portion of the peritoneal cavity is the pouch of Douglas in women and the retrovesical space in men, both in the upright and supine position.
